Average Soil Texture: mineral - loamy sand, pH at 15.24 cm = 3.8
Geology: aeolian (sand rim)
General Landscape Description: Survey site is located in a mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. The terrain is very flat and sandy. The forest is very open, in general, with low shrubs (<3' on average). As you approach the coastal plain pond, the forest cover thins and the shrub layer reaches 6-9', forming a much denser thicket. The aerial photo indicates standing water around the pond, increasing as you head NW toward Mattix Run. The surrounding area is being developed. A new road has been built N of Galloway Rd. since the 1993 aerial imagery. A new housing development is being built near Collins Rd. (now Sylvan Lane). Sounds of construction come from every direction. A school is found to the N, <1mile away, as well as an adjacent housing development. The surrounding woodland has 30-50% Pinus cover with some Nyssa, Quercus and Acer rubrum. Vaccinium spp. and Clethra cover the ground reaching only ~3-4' in height. Also found are Kalmia angustifolia, brackenfern, dewberry, Gaultheria, and Smilax glauca.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: A band of deciduous shrubs and small trees surrounds the coastal plain pond. Beyond this band (<=20') is a mixed evergreen woodland dominated by Pinus rigida. The shrubs and trees are growing on hummocks that forms a channelized rim around the pond, which is currently dry. Generally, a bare area separates the shrub/tree zone frrom the herbaceous area.
