Landscape Narrative ? Soil Description: organic - muck; mineral - sand; pH at 15.2 cm = 3.8 General Landscape Description: The survey site is located in Lebanon State Forest, surrounded by Pinus rigida lowland forest. There is a guage deteriorating in the pond, indicating that it may have been part of the McDonalds Branch study by Buell and McCormack. Heading E and S, the forest becomes upland. Site is at the headwaters of McDonalds Branch, which flows W and N of the site. A gravel mine is still in use about a 1/2 mile ESE of the site. Sand roads run close to the site, with one of them <10' from the pond edges. Physiographic Province: Outer Coastal Plain Watershed Code: 02040202030

Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Coastal plain intermittent ponds about 200 feet apart within pitch pine lowland forest transitioning into upland to the east and south. Ponds are just north and east of the headwaters of the McDonalds Branch, which flows west and north of the site across a relatively flat landscape underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) - Juncus pelocarpus - Eriocaulon aquaticum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to middle zones of the ponds. The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A2) is dominated in the southern pond by Vaccinium corymbosum and small Acer rubrum, with Chamaedaphne calyculata, Smilax rotundifolia, small Pinus rigida, Leucothoe racemosa, Ilex glabra, Kalmia angustifolia, Nyssa sylvatica and Woodwardia virginica. The adjacent pondshore (B2) in the northern pond is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata and Sphagnum cuspidatum, with seedlings of Acer rubrum and Pinus rigida, Vaccinium corymbosum, Kalmia angustifolia, Woodwardia virginica and Photinia pyrifolia. A Vaccinium-dominated zone (B3) surrounds the Chamaedaphne-zone, with the addition of Rhododendron viscosum and Gaylussacia frondosa to the species found around the southern pond. Pitch pine upland forest and Atlantic white cedar swamps along river corridors spans the surrounding area. A gravel mine is still in use about a ½ mile east-southeast of the site and sand roads run close to the ponds, crisscrossing the area. A gauge is deteriorating in pond A, indicating to Kim Laidig (Pinelands ecologist) that the pond may have been part of a McDonalds Branch Study by Buell and McCormick. The surrounding buffer is otherwise relatively undisturbed, though may be logged or managed for wildlife. Community Description: Shrub and small tree zone surrounding an intermittent pond dominated by Ericaceous spp. The observation point along the southern edge is dominated by tall shrubs. The northern area is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata. There are a few tall Acer rubrum on the southern side, but the northern area is dominated by Acer rubrum with a few Nyssa sylvatica and Pinus rigida. There is a small slope of about 3 degress, with hummocks on the edge closest to the pond. Other species found but not in observation area: Nyssa sylvatica (0.01%), Woodwardia virginica (0.01%)
