Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: mineral - sand; 1/2" Sphagnum sp. on 3-4" black loamy sand over gray sand with small cobbles. Sand is of the Cohansey Formation.
Landscape Description: Small, 0.3-acre pondshore community in good condition within a 0.7-acre coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by second growth (fire) scrub-oak pitch pine shrubland and woodland. Survey site is surrounded by shrub-oak pine upland that burned within the past 10-15 years. It remains very open with scattered pines and scrub oaks, with an understory of huckleberries, brackenfern, Gaultheria and heather (Hudsonia sp). A swath of pine ~200-300' wide runs NW-SE just north of the site. The site is ~1/2 mile south of Oyster Creek and its power plant. Industrial area is ~1000' east, while woodlands extend west and south for a mile.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond in a recently burned scrub oak-pitch pine shrubland and woodland about 2000’ south of Oyster Creek. The surrounding landscape is gently rolling sand dunes covered in pitch pine woodland. The central zone of the pond (A2) is dominated by Carex striata var. brevis and Panicum verrucosum, with Cephalanthus occidentalis, Triadenum virginicum, Sphagnum sp., Dichanthelium sp. and Xyris jupicai. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the middle to upper zones of the pond. There is a bare zone between the upper herbaceous zone and surrounding shrub zone. The shrub zone (A3) is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum and Leucothoe racemosa, with Ilex glabra, Smilax glauca, Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Pinus rigida. Scrub oak-pitch pine shrubland surrounds the pond to the west and south, while taller pitch pine woodland lies east and north, with a small band of Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica between the pond and the pines. Coniferous forest, with Atlantic white cedar swamps along Oyster Creek, continue west and south. Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant lies about 3000’ north of the site and industrial and residential areas begin about 1000’ to the east. Other than fire management and hunting, there appears to be little anthropogenic disturbance in the immediate surrounding buffer land.
Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant specie are Andropogon gyrans (30%) and Panicum verrucosum (25%), with Carex striata var. brevis (2%), Sphagnum sp. (2%), Triadenum virginicum (1%), Xyris jupicai (1%), Drosera intermedia (1%), Rhynchospora capitellata (1%), less than 1% Euthamia sp. and about 35% unvegetated surface cover (15% bare soil, 5% sand, 15% litter and duff). Soil is 3-4” layer of loamy sand, pH approximately 4.0, overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. Gentle slope (0-3º), variable aspect.
Community Description (field): Herbaceous zone of coastal plain intermittent pond dominated by grasses. A barren area separates this zone from surrounding shrubs, while it transitions to denser grasses and different species mix in the adjacent zone of Cephalanthus. Soil is moist, with no standing water. Sand is thinly spread throughout, above dark organic layer (muck). Everything but the Andropogon rosettes are dried out at this time, making cover estimates difficult. Slope up to the woody zone is about 2-3 degrees. Species distribution appears relatively even throughout, with Drosera and Xyris more apparent in a few patches and Andropogon as a monoculture on the upper edges of the zone. Carex striata var. brevis is much more abundant in the NW corner bordering Vaccinium.
Other species present but not in observation area: Morella pensylvanica
Note: Although the whole 0.7-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.3 acres of the pond.
