Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond in a recently burned scrub oak-pitch pine shrubland and woodland about 2000’ south of Oyster Creek. The surrounding landscape is gently rolling sand dunes covered in pitch pine woodland. The central zone of the pond (A2) is dominated by Carex striata var. brevis and Panicum verrucosum, with Cephalanthus occidentalis, Triadenum virginicum, Sphagnum sp., Dichanthelium sp. and Xyris jupicai. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the middle to upper zones of the pond. There is a bare zone between the upper herbaceous zone and surrounding shrub zone. The shrub zone (A3) is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum and Leucothoe racemosa, with Ilex glabra, Smilax glauca, Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Pinus rigida. Scrub oak-pitch pine shrubland surrounds the pond to the west and south, while taller pitch pine woodland lies east and north, with a small band of Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica between the pond and the pines. Coniferous forest, with Atlantic white cedar swamps along Oyster Creek, continue west and south. Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant lies about 3000’ north of the site and industrial and residential areas begin about 1000’ to the east. Other than fire management and hunting, there appears to be little anthropogenic disturbance in the immediate surrounding buffer land. Community Description: Tall shrub zone surrounding a coastal plain pond dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum. Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica form a short canopy in the eastern area, with Pinus rigida behind, but otherwise, scattered. The vast majority is tall shrub, with young oak-pine woodlots to the S and W. Ilex glabra grows 2-10' back from the edge of the pond and Leucothoe shoots grow below most of the Vaccinium along the edge. A bare zone separates this area from the Andropogon zone, except in the NW corner where Carex striata var. brevis comes up to the edge. The slope is higher in this zone, 3-5 degrees, except in the NW near the Carex where it is only 2-3 degrees. Additional species present but not in observation point: Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, Pinus rigida
