Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: Thick layer of muck with undecomposed plant material over sandy loam overlying interbedded gravel, sand and clay of the Unnamed Formation at Cape May; pH at 15.2 cm = 3.8
Landscape Description: 0.8-acre pondshore community in good condition within a 2.2-acre coastal plain pond surrounded by good quality deciduous wetland forest. Site is located on the W side of Cape May peninsula surrounded by forest characterized by a Quercus canopy, Ilex opaca and Clethra alnifolia understory. The western shore of the peninsula is about 0.5 mile west. Phragmites-dominated mosquito ditches begin about 200' west, stretching S and W into the bay. The water table is close to the surface and there are apparently ephemeral ponds throughout the surrounding forest. Sand roads pass by to the NE and SW about 800' and 500', respectively. A network of roads to the SE have apparently been abandoned and are becoming overgrown.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain intermittent pond within deciduous wetland forest, about 2000 feet east of the Delaware Bay. Surrounding landscape is very flat, underlain by gravel, sand and clay of the Unnamed Formation at Cape May. Nymphaea odorata - Eleocharis robbinsii Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone (A1) of the pond. An adjacent patch (A2) on the eastern edge of the community is dominated by Panicum dichotomiflorum, with Cyperus erythrorhizos, an unidentified moss, Phragmites australis, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Hibiscus sp., Decodon verticillatus and Bidens connata. The surrounding upper shore (A3) of the pond is dominated by Phragmites australis, with Sphagnum sp., Decodon verticillatus, Acer rubrum seedlings and Diospyros seedlings. The surrounding forested zone (A4) is dominated by Acer rubrum, with Ilex opaca, Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus phellos, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Smilax rotundifolia, Liquidambar styraciflua, Clethra alnifolia, unidentified mosses, and Sphagnum sp. Forested wetlands extend several thousand feet north and east, and about 1000 feet west and south where tidal marsh dominates to the coast. Mobile homes and a research center lie about 1000 to 1500 feet west of the site. Mobile homes and other residential and agricultural areas are about 2000 feet, along the paved road Route 549. Only the small swath of wetland forest around the pond remains relatively free of anthropogenic disturbance.
Community Description: Good quality sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community is dominated by Nymphaea odorata (20%), with Panicum dichotomiflorum (5%), Eleocharis olivacea (3%), Fimbristylis autumnalis (3%), less than 1% Ludwigia palustris and Bidens connata, and about 70% unvegetated surface cover (60% bare muck with a few patches of sand, 10% litter and duff). Soil is 4-5” layer of muck over sand, pH 3.8, overlying interbedded gravel, sand and clay of the Unnamed Formation at Cape May. No standing water on survey date and soil is very firm, but moist throughout. Full sun exposure, virtually no slope. Community may be tidally influenced.
Community Description (field): Central zone of coastal plain pond characterized by scattered Nuphar on open soil. Patches of Panicum dichotomiflorum, Eleocharis spp. and Fimbristylis autumnalis are found in the W portion and in patches around the edge. There is no standing water and soil is firm but clearly moist throughout. There are some patches of sand within this area.
Other species present but not in observation point: Eleocharis robbinsii (0.01%)
Fauna: flicker (in surrounding forest), small blue dragonfly, small red dragonfly, large light blue dragonfly, deer tracks, turtle shee, muskrat bones
