Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Good quality sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community is dominated by Panicum dichotomiflorum (30%), with Cyperus erythrorhizos (20%), an unidentified moss (7%), Phragmites australis (5%), less than 1% Fimbristylis autumnalis, Hibiscus sp., Decodon verticillatus and Bidens connata, and about 40% unvegetated surface cover (35% bare muck, 5% litter and duff). Soil is muck over sand, pH 3.8, overlying interbedded gravel, sand and clay of the Unnamed Formation at Cape May. No standing water on survey date and soil is very firm, but moist throughout. Full sun exposure, very gentle slope. This community may be tidally influence.
Community Description: Patch dominated by Panicum on the E edge of a coastal plain pond among a thin edge of Phragmites. Cyperus erythrorhizos has finished going to seed and has a new batch of seedheads at the base of many small plants. No standing water but soil appears moist though very firm. Area seems 1-2" higher in elevation than adjacent area. Patch on the W side is very similar but more densely vegetated and taller.
Fauna: crow, blue jay, frogs
