The sparsely vegetated central zone (A1) of the pond is dominated by Nymphaea odorata, with Panicum dichotomiflorum, Eleocharis olivacea, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Ludwigia palustris and Bidens connata. The surrounding forested zone (A4) is dominated by Acer rubrum, with Ilex opaca, Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus phellos, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Smilax rotundifolia, Liquidambar styraciflua, Clethra alnifolia, an unidentified mosses, and Sphagnum sp. Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond Community Description: Good quality vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the upper zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community is dominated by Phragmites australis (60%) and Sphagnum sp. (30%), with Decodon verticillatus (1%), and less than 1% Acer rubrum seedlings and Diospyros seedlings. Soil is sandy loam, pH 3.8, overlying interbedded gravel, sand and clay of the Unnamed Formation at Cape May. No standing water on survey date and soil is very firm, but moist throughout. Variable aspect, very gentle slope. This community may be tidally influenced. Community Description (field): Phragmites zone ~5-10m wide on the outer shore of a coastal plain pond. A water line ~1-1.5' high can be seen on the inner edge of this zone and ~6" on the outer zone. The area is noticeably elevated, somewhat, on hummocks surrounding the central area. There is Sphagnum and bare ground under the canopy of surrounding trees between the Phragmites and forest. Note: Although the whole 2.2-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Phragmites australis Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.8 acres of the pond.
