Site is 1 mile south of Fresh Ponds. From Fresh Ponds, travel southwest on Fresh Ponds Road to Deans-Rhode Hall Road (Route 610). Turn left (southeast) on Deans-Rhode Hall Road and continue almost 1 mile to trailhead with parking space on left (north) side of road.

Soil Description: sand interbedded with clay or clay silt of the Magothy Formation
Landscape Description: 3 ponds located east of a gravel pit and Pigeon Swamp. One pond is a disturbed area in the powerline and the other 2 are in the woods to the east and south. The survey site is a small, 0.3-acre, pondshore community in fair condition within a 0.7-acre coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by deciduous forest.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: Fair quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is made up of two distinct, but contiguous areas. The central to middle zone (A3) is dominated by Leersia oryzoides (45%), with Polygonum lapathifolium (10%), Panicum verrucosum (10%), Cephalanthus occidentalis (10%, in patches), Polygonum punctatum (5%), Polygonum sagittatum (3%), Lycopus sp. (3%), Erechtites hieracifolia (3%), Polygonum careyi (3%), Cuscuta sp. (3%), Nymphaea odorata (less than 1%) and Echinocloa muricata. The upper zone (A2) is sparsely vegetated (50% litter and duff, 5% downed wood), dominated by Panicum verrucosum (20%), with Sphagnum sp. (10%), Polygonum spp. (3%), Lycopus sp. (2%), Bidens sp. (2%), Rhexia sp. (2%), Viola primulifolia (2%), Cephalanthus occidentalis (1%) and less than 1% Euthamia graminifolia, Hypericum sp., Liquidambar styraciflua seedlings, Nyssa sylvatica seedlings and Eupatorium perfoliatum. Underlying soil is sand interbedded with clay or clay silt of the Magothy Formation. Variable aspect; gentle slope.
