Soil Description: muck over sand of the Cohansey Formation
Landscape Description: Excellent quality, 0.7-acre pondshore community within a medium-sized (1.2-acre) coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by pitch pine and upland forest. Surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. The northern reaches of tributaries to the Wading River lie between 300-700’ east and west of the pond, with Atlantic white cedar swamp along their flanks starting about 1000’ to the south. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) - Juncus pelocarpus - Eriocaulon aquaticum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to upper zones of the pond (A1). The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A2) is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, with Kalmia angustifolia and Sphagnum sp. A zone dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum surrounds the Chamaedaphne, with Gaylussacia frondosa, Ilex glabra, Rhododendron viscosum, Smilax rotundifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, and small Pinus rigida, Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica. Forested wetland around the pond is surrounded by Pinus rigida lowland forest. Coniferous forest extends for many miles around the pond, cut by a few paved roads and many sand roads, and dotted with a few sand mines (one very large about 2500’ north). A cranberry bog extends across the Biddle and Pope Branches between 400-800’ west and southeast of the pond. While areas of the forest may still be selectively logged, patches managed for wildlife and forest fires controlled, there is practically no current anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land, other than the mines and cranberry bogs described above.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Coastal plain pond with 2 distinct zones: a narrow leatherleaf zone (A2) and an expansive 0.7-acre wetland herb zone (A1). A pitch pine lowland surrounds the pond. After previous day's rain, the pond is uniformly 4-5" deep in the herbaceous zone but no standing water in the leatherleaf zone. The entire herb zone is flat.
Community Description: Excellent quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence occupies most of the pond and is dominated by Juncus pelocarpus (20%) and Eriocaulon aquaticum (10%), with Eleocharis olivacea (1%) and less than 1% Cladium mariscoides, Carex striata var. brevis and Sphagnum sp. Zone is sparsely vegetated (70% bare muck), but fairly uniformly covered, with less cover near the perimeter. Small clumps of Eriocaulon aquaticum appear as pin cushions. Small Carex striata var. brevis patch (3-5 meters) within zone. Very flat, full sun exposure. Muck (0-2 centimeters) over loamy sand of the Cohansey Formation. Water depth about 4” on survey date.
Community Description (field): A Juncus pelocarpus zone occupies the majority of the pond. This zone is very flat and fairly uniformly covered in herbs, although the perimeter has less vegetative cover. Small clumps of Eriocaulon aquaticum appear as pin cushions. There is a small Carex striata var. brevis patch (3x5m) in this zone. Most herbs are brown at the time.
Note: This pond has also been called Pope Branch Isolated Pond by the Pinelands Commission.
