Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: muck over sand of the Cohansey Formation
Landscape Description: Excellent quality, 0.7-acre pondshore community within a medium-sized (1.2-acre) coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by pitch pine and upland forest. Surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. The northern reaches of tributaries to the Wading River lie between 300-700’ east and west of the pond, with Atlantic white cedar swamp along their flanks starting about 1000’ to the south. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) - Juncus pelocarpus - Eriocaulon aquaticum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to upper zones of the pond (A1). The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A2) is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, with Kalmia angustifolia and Sphagnum sp. A zone dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum surrounds the Chamaedaphne, with Gaylussacia frondosa, Ilex glabra, Rhododendron viscosum, Smilax rotundifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, and small Pinus rigida, Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica. Forested wetland around the pond is surrounded by Pinus rigida lowland forest. Coniferous forest extends for many miles around the pond, cut by a few paved roads and many sand roads, and dotted with a few sand mines (one very large about 2500’ north). A cranberry bog extends across the Biddle and Pope Branches between 400-800’ west and southeast of the pond. While areas of the forest may still be selectively logged, patches managed for wildlife and forest fires controlled, there is practically no current anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land, other than the mines and cranberry bogs described above.
