Landscape Narrative ? Landscape Description: Coastal plain pond with 3 distinct zones in the RC3S pond: Chamaedaphne calyculata (RC3S-1), Dulichium arundinaceum (RC3S-2), and Eleocharis flavescens var. olivacea (now Eleocharis olivacea var. olivacea) / open substrate zone (RC3S-3). The distinctive feature of this pond is the amount of Dulichium. The muck layer is thick throughout (>10 cm). There is ankle-deep standing water in the the open zone and part of the Dulichium arundinaceum zone. The surveyed area is surrounded by pine upland or pine transitional vegetation with abundant Smilax. This is a 0.2-acre pondshore community in good condition within a 0.7-acre coastal plain intermittent pond. Physiographic Province: Outer Coastal Plain Watershed Code: 02040202030

Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Three coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-scrub oak woodland. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat and dry, though the headwaters of the Pole Bridge Branch lie to the northeast and of the North Branch of Mt. Misery Brook lie to the southwest. The area is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the two southern ponds. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone in the northernmost pond and the middle to upper zones of all three ponds. Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the uppermost zone of the northern pond. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, Kalmia angustifolia, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, and Lyonia mariana with occassional Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, Cephalanthus occidentalis and Decodon verticillata. The surrounding pitch pine-scrub oak forest extends about a ½ mile west and ¼ mile east, with pine forest extending several miles north, west and south and west. The town of Whiting is about 1 mile to the northeast, but except for a few sand mining operations and sand roads throughout the forest, there appears to be little anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land. Community Description: Dulichium arundinaceum-dominated zone from 0-4 m wide. Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the upper zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. The community is dominated by Dulichium arundinaceum (40%) and Sphagnum sp. (50%), with Carex striata var. brevis (5%), Decodon verticillatus (1%), Cephalanthus occidentalis seedlings (1%), and less than 1% Andropogon virginicus and Andropogon glomeratus. Soil substrate is sand of the Cohansey Formation. Standing water in adjacent central zone. Variable aspect, gentle slope (0-3º). Note: Although the whole 0.7 acre pond (Roosevelt 3 South) was mapped for this occurrence, Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.2 acres of the pond.
