Landscape Description: 0.2-acre pondshore community in fair to good condition within two coastal plain ponds, one disturbed by ORVs, the other apparently undisturbed, surrounded by pine-scrub oak upland woodland. Almost identical in vegetation community structure and species composition to RC2S (Roosevelt City 2 South Pond) but this site is larger and has greater species diversity.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: Three coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-scrub oak woodland. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat and dry, though the headwaters of the Pole Bridge Branch lie to the northeast and of the North Branch of Mt. Misery Brook lie to the southwest. The area is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the two southern ponds. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone in the northernmost pond and the middle to upper zones of all three ponds. Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the uppermost zone of the northern pond. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, Kalmia angustifolia, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, and Lyonia mariana with occassional Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, Cephalanthus occidentalis and Decodon verticillata. The surrounding pitch pine-scrub oak forest extends about a ½ mile west and ¼ mile east, with pine forest extending several miles north, west and south and west. The town of Whiting is about 1 mile to the northeast, but except for a few sand mining operations and sand roads throughout the forest, there appears to be little anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land.
Community Description: Dichanthelium sp.-dominated zone with Hypericum canadense. Black sand is evident on the surface. Fair to good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central zones of two coastal plain intermittent ponds about 180 feet apart. The central zone of the northern pond (RC2N-1) is dominated by Dichanthelium sp. (40%) and Hypericum canadense (50%), with less than 1% Juncus pelocarpus and Andropogon virginicus. The central zone of the southern pond (RC2S-1) is dominated by Dichanthelium sp. (60%), with Sphagnum sp. (30%), Hypericum canadense (5%), Xyris difformis var. difformis (5%) and less than 1% Juncus pelocarpus and Andropogon virginicus. Soil is loamy sand and sand, overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. No standing water on survey date. Gentle slope (0-3º), variable aspect.
Note: Although the whole 1.2-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.2 acres of the two ponds (Roosevelt City 2 South, Roosevelt City 2 North).
