Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: Three coastal plain intermittent ponds within pitch pine-scrub oak woodland. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat and dry, though the headwaters of the Pole Bridge Branch lie to the northeast and of the North Branch of Mt. Misery Brook lie to the southwest. The area is underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the two southern ponds. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone in the northernmost pond and the middle to upper zones of all three ponds. Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the uppermost zone of the northern pond. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata, Kalmia angustifolia, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, and Lyonia mariana with occassional Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, Cephalanthus occidentalis and Decodon verticillata. The surrounding pitch pine-scrub oak forest extends about a ½ mile west and ¼ mile east, with pine forest extending several miles north, west and south and west. The town of Whiting is about 1 mile to the northeast, but except for a few sand mining operations and sand roads throughout the forest, there appears to be little anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land. Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of three coastal plain intermittent ponds between about 200 and 1000 feet apart. The southernmost pond community occupies the middle to upper zone of the pond (RC2S-2) and is dominated Xyris difformis var. difformis (32%) and Sphagnum sp. (30%), with Panicum sp. (2%) Rhynchospora alba (less than 1%), and about 40% unvegetated loamy sand substrate. The middle pond community occupies the middle to upper zone of the pond (RC2N-2) and is dominated by Xyris difformis var. difformis (22%), with Andropogon virginicus (5%), Dichanthelium sp. (5%), Hypericum canadense (1%), less than 1% Fimbristylis autumnalis, Rhynchospora chalarocephala, Juncus pelocarpus and about 40% unvegetated loamy sand substrate. The northernmost pond community occupies the central zone of the pond (RC3S-3) and is dominated by Sphagnum sp. (20%), with Eleocharis olivacea (5%), less than 1% Xyris difformis var. difformis and Dulichium arundinaceum, and about 80% open muck substrate. Soil is loamy sand and sand, overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation. The northernmost pond held ankle deep water, while the southern two ponds had no standing water on survey date. Gentle slope (0-3º), variable aspect. Note: Although the total acreage (1.9 acres) of all three ponds was mapped for this occurrence, Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.42 acres of the ponds (0.2 acres in Roosevelt City 2 North, 0.2 acres in Roosevelt City 2 South, and 0.02 acres in Roosevelt City 3 South).
