Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: 5 centimeters of muck over sand of the Cohansey Formation.
Landscape Description: 1.1-acre pondshore community in excellent condition within a 1.5-acre, coastal plain pond surrounded by good quality pitch pine forest. Coastal plain intermittent pond in pitch pine upland with some oaks (north) and lowland (south), just north of the headwaters of a tributary to the Mullica River. Surrounding area is relatively flat, with drainages south into the Mullica River and southeast into the Wading River. Underlying soil is sand of the Cohansey Formation. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) – Xyris (difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the pond, which likely remains inundated in non-drought years. The surrounding shrub zone (B2) is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Leucothoe racemosa, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Ilex glabra, Carex striata var. brevis, Smilax rotundifolia, Kalmia angustifolia, Clethra alnifolia, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Decodon verticillatus, and Andropogon virginicus. The surrounding pitch pine forest extends for several miles around the site, with wetlands around tributaries, a few roads, and little other anthropogenic disturbance.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: A coastal plain pond which probably has standing water throughout the season in non-drought years. No real zonation present; the whole pond is essentially a flat basin with open muck and clumps or islands of Juncus militaris-dominated stands. The topography is pronounced, however, from the shrubby perimeter to the uplands - at least on the N side of the pond. There is a small 10x10m area with standing water to 3" deep - probably the remains of heavy rain a few days ago. The J. militaris islands are a distinctive feature of this pond. Also of note are a few plants of Rhynchospora scirpoides found in the standing water area. N side is pine upland with some oaks; other sides are more pine lowland with scattered red maples.
Community Description: Excellent quality very sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Occurrence is likely inundated in non-drought years. Dominant species is Juncus militaris (15%), occurring in patches with Sphagnum sp. (5%), Eleocharis robbinsii (3%), Xyris sp. (1%), Panicum verrucosum (1%), less than 1% Drosera intermedia, Eleocharis olivacea and Rhynchospora scirpoides, and 80% unvegetated bare soil. Approximately 3 inches of water in 10 x 10 meter eastern area of pond. Gentle slope, variable aspect.
Community Description (field): The Juncus militaris/open marsh zone is primarily a very flat, open muck matrix with islands (1x1m to 10x10m) of J. militaris. There are other herbs scattered throughout the open muck, with Eleocharis robbinsii and Xyris sp. accounting for most of the sparse cover. The pond perimeter is comprised of the forest edge (B2).
Note: Although the whole 1.5-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) – Xyris (difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 1.1 acres of the pond.
