Landscape Narrative ? Soil Description: sand of the Cohansey Formation Landscape Description: Shrubby perimeter of a coastal plain intermittent pond in pitch pine upland with some oaks (north) and lowland (south), just north of the headwaters of a tributary to the Mullica River. Surrounding area is relatively flat, with drainages south into the Mullica River and southeast into the Wading River. Underlying soil is sand of the Cohansey Formation. Eleocharis (microcarpa, olivacea) – Xyris (difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation (B1) dominates the pond, which likely remains inundated in non-drought years. This perimeter shrub zone (B2) is dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Leucothoe racemosa, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Ilex glabra, Carex striata var. brevis, Smilax rotundifolia, Kalmia angustifolia, Clethra alnifolia, Cephalanthus occidentalis, Decodon verticillatus, and Andropogon virginicus. The surrounding pitch pine forest extends for several miles around the site, with wetlands around tributaries, a few roads, and little other anthropogenic disturbance. Observation Narrative ? Community Type: coastal plain pond General Description: A coastal plain pond which probably has standing water throughout the season in non-drought years. No real zonation present; the whole pond is essentially a flat basin with open muck and clumps or islands of Juncus militaris-dominated stands. The topography is pronounced, however, from the shrubby perimeter to the uplands - at least on the N side of the pond. There is a small 10x10m area with standing water to 3" deep - probably the remains of heavy rain a few days ago. The J. militaris islands are a distinctive feature of this pond. Also of note are a few plants of Rhynchospora scirpoides found in the standing water area. N side is pine upland with some oaks; other sides are more pine lowland with scattered red maples. Community Description: The forest edge along the pond perimeter of a Juncus militaris/open marsh zone.
