Landscape Narrative ![?](http://vegbank.org/vegbank/images/question.gif) |
Soil Description: Soil is shallow mucky sand underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation.
Landscape Description: 0.8-acre pondshore community in good condition within a 1.5-acre coastal plain pond surrounded by good quality pitch pine lowland. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to upper zones of the pond. The surrounding shrub zone is dominated by stumps of Vaccinium corymbosum with Sphagnum sp. and scattered Acer rubrum. This area is surrounded by a tall shrub zone dominated by Leucothoe racemosa, with Vaccinium corymbosum, Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra and Smilax rotundifolia. Pitch pine lowlands surround the pond. A paved road lies about 2500 feet to the west, but the surrounding buffer landscape is a large expanse of forest. While areas of the forest may still be selectively logged and forest fires may be controlled, it receives practically no current anthropogenic disturbance.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
General Description: A pond with a main herbaceous zone dominated by Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, a smaller patch of Carex striata var. brevis (located within the Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens zone), and an elevated perimeter of Vaccinium corymbosum stumps. The pond fringe is a narrow red maple zone with pitch pine lowland behind it. Muhlenbergia torreyana is present in a few +/- 1x1m clumps. No water is present despite rain yesterday. The Vaccinium stump zone has dried and green Sphagnum is present on the surface. A few red maple trees and a few scattered herbs are along the border with the Panicum zone. The tall shrub zone, dominated by Leucothoe racemosa, is followed by V. corymbosum.
Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species are Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens (20%) and Xyris sp. (15%), with Andropogon virginicus (5%), Dulichium arundinaceum (2%), Muhlenbergia torreyana (1%), less than 1% Cyperus dentatus and Panicum verrucosum. 60% unvegetated (exposed sand). A 10 x 10 meter patch of Carex striata var. brevis grows in the northwest corner of the zone. No standing water on survey date, despite rain previous day. Gentle slope, variable aspect.
Community Description (field): Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens dominated herbaceous zone occupies the lowest elevation of the pond. Other herbs are mixed in. Xyris are virtually decomposed (very poor material). The Carex striata var. brevis is limited to a patch about 10x10 m at the NW end of the pond.
Other species present but not in observation point: Lyonia mariana, Ilex glabra and Smilax rotundifolia
Note: Although the whole 1.5-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens – Dichanthelium sp. – Sphagnum sp. Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.8 acres of the pond.
