Location Narrative |
Site is about 2.4 miles south of the intersection of Routes 72 & 532. From that intersection, travel southeast on combined Route 72/532 about 1.3 miles to Crawley Road (called Sooey Road on USGS map). Turn right (south) on Crawley/Sooey Road (a sand road) and continue 2.3 miles across two branches of Sykes Branch to a sand road on the right just before Shreve Branch. Turn right (west) and continue about 3.0 miles. Pond is on the right (north) of the sand road.

Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: 0-3 centimeters of muck over dark sand, overlying the sand of the Cohansey Formation
Landscape Description: Small, approximately 0.12 acre, pondshore community in pristine condition within a medium-sized, 2.4-acre, coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by pitch pine-scrub oak upland forest. Clean, concentric zonation is not present but rather, "zonation" is more of a mosaic within pitch pine-scrub oak upland forest. Surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand of the Cohansey Formation. Tributaries to the Wading River drain west, flanked by Atlantic white cedar wetlands. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) – Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation (A) dominates the central zone of the pond. The adjacent middle to upper pondshore zone (the “P. verrucosum/virgatum zone”) is dominated by Panicum verrucosum, with Panicum virgatum, Xyris difformis, Carex striata var. brevis, Rhynchospora alba and Cyperus dentatus, as well as patches of Chamaedaphne calyculata. The upper pondshore (B2) is dominated by Chamaedaphne calyculata and Sphagnum sp., interspersed with Vaccinium corymbosum and Kalmia angustifolia. The pond is surrounded by Pinus rigida, Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Ilex glabra, Kalmia angustifolia and Smilax rotundifolia. Pitch pine-scrub oak upland spans the area between the Wading River tributaries and east for several miles. Other than Routes 72 and 532, sand roads and an air strip to the northeast, the surrounding buffer land is practically undisturbed, though it may be managed (selectively logged, fires controlled).

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: High quality sparsely vegetated herbaceous community occurring in the central zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Xyris difformis (10%) is the dominant species, with patchy distribution. Associated species include Panicum verrucosum (2%), Eleocharis olivacea (1%), Cyperus dentatus (1%) and less than 1% Juncus pelocarpus. Unvegetated surface cover is approximately 85%. Standing water with a depth of 3-4” covers 0-3 centimeters of muck over dark sand, overlying the sand of the Cohansey Formation.
Community Description (field): This is the Xyris difformis, open water zone, dominated by small Xyris diformis (3-8" high). Xyris has a uniform to patchy distribution. Yesterday's rain has collected to a depth of 3-4". This zone is in the center of the pond and is bound in places by an abrupt transition to the Chamedaphne zone or in a gradual transition to the P. verrucosum/virgatum zone. All herbaceous vegetation is brown at the time.
Note: Decou Satellite South Pond is called Shreve Branch Spung by the Pinelands Commission.
