Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: fine sand with some light gray organic material
Landscape Description: This is part of a 2-acre pondshore community in 3.9-acre floristically diverse coastal plain intermittent pond in good condition, formerly a cranberry bog, surrounded by good quality deciduous forested wetlands that extends east. Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central to upper zones of the pond (A2, A3, A4). The adjacent upper pondshore (A5) along the northern edge of the pond is dominated by Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, with Panicum verrucosum, Rhexia mariana, Juncus canadensis and scattered Cephalanthus occidentalis. A band of Cephalanthus occidentalis grows along the northern edge of the pond and a few shrubs are scattered in the center of the pond. A dense shrub and forested wetland zone (A1) surrounds the pond dominated by Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica and Vaccinium corymbosum, with Quercus alba, Q. palustris, Liquidambar styraciflua, Pinus rigida, Smilax rotundifolia, Clethra alnifolia and Gaultheria procumbens. Route 527 is immediately west of the site, but forested wetlands extend east into Turkey Swamp. Homes, golf courses and some agricultural fields and cranberry bogs occupy the surrounding area, but forested wetlands associated with the South Branch and Turkey Swamp are the dominant feature of the surrounding buffer area.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: Good quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the central to upper zones of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Community occurrence is made up of three somewhat distinct patches, a small Fimbristylis autumnalis-dominated patch near the center, a large Panicum verrucosum-dominated patch from the center to middle zones and a Juncus canadensis and Rhexia mariana-dominated patch on the upper pondshore in the southern portion of the pond that likely vary spatially and temporally. Fimbristylis autumnalis dominates the center of the pond (A4) with 30% cover, with an unidentified Panicum (20%), Panicum verrucosum (10%), Rhexia mariana (3%), Hypericum sp. (3%), Hypericum c.f. denticulatum (2%) and 30% bare ground (dry, cracked silt above fine sand). The middle zone (A3) of the pond is dominated by Panicum verrucosum (55%), with Rhexia mariana (4%), less than 1% Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Panicum sp., Hypericum c.f. mutilum, Hypericum sp., Schizachyrium scoparium, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Xyris c.f. torta, Euthamia tenuifolia, Paspalum c.f. dissectum, Rhynchospora sp., scattered Cephalanthus occidentalis, 30% bare soil (sand) and 5% duff. The upper pondshore (A2) is about 5 meters wide and is dominated by rushes and forbs: Juncus canadensis (50%) and Rhexia mariana (30%), with Panicum verrucosum (8%), Juncus c.f. effusus (2%), Sphagnum sp. (3%), less than 1% Acer rubrum seedlings, Euthamia tenuifolia, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Dichanthelium scabriusculum, Smilax rotundifolia seedlings, Schizachyrium scoparium, and 20% leaf litter (no bare soil). Muck overlying sand in Fimbristylis-zone, with surficial sand elsewhere. Underlying substrate is sand and clay of the Lower Member. No standing water, dry cracked soil surface on survey date. Full sun exposure with virtually no slope in central zone and small (2-4º) slope along upper pondshore.
Additional species present but not found in observation area: Schizachyrium scoparium
Fauna: praying mantis
Note: Although the whole 3.9-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Rhexia virginica - Panicum verrucosum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 2 acres of the pond.
