Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: sandy loam soil, pH 3.8, overlies sand of the Cohansey Formation
Landscape Description: 3-acre pondshore community in good condition within a large, 4.5-acre, coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by high quality pine-oak-heath forest which surrounds for 1 mile or more in all directions. Site is just northeast of the headwaters of the Slab Branch which flows west and south into the Maurice River. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. Slab Branch flows west, joining Middle and Nixons Branches to flow into Muskee Creek about a mile west of the site. Carex striata var. brevis Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the pond (A1). The adjacent middle to outer zone of the pond (A2) is dominated by Panicum virgatum, with Saccharum giganteum, Carex striata var. brevis, Sphagnum sp., and Panicum sp. The pond is surrounded by a dense thicket of shrubs (A3) growing on hummocks dominated by Acer rubrum, Clethra alnifolia and Leucothoe racemosa, with Smilax rotundifolia, Sphagnum tenerum, Vaccinium corymbosum, Nyssa sylvatica, Liquidambar styraciflua, Pinus rigida, Solidago sp. and Woodwardia virginica. Mixed deciduous evergreen forest extends around the site, with some Atlantic white cedar along the rivers. The site is in Peaslee Wildlife Management Area, about 1200 feet southwest of a powerline right-of-way, within a network of sand roads, but otherwise undisturbed surrounding buffer. Other intermittent ponds documented by the Pinelands Commission lie about 2000' east and southeast.

Observation Narrative |
Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: High quality herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the outer zone of a coastal plain intermittent pond. Dominant species is Panicum virgatum (35% overall, 65% near the outer edges), with Saccharum giganteum (25%), Carex striata var. brevis (15%), Sphagnum sp. (20%) and Panicum sp. (less than 1%). Distribution changes from the center to outer edges of the zone with C. striata var. brevis and S. giganteum more prevalent near the center and P. virgatum forming a near-monoculture close to the outer edges of the zone. Variable aspect, very little slope (0-3º).
Community Description (field): Graminoid-dominated zone surrounding a central herbaceous/tree zone of a coastal plain pond. The understory is characterized by Cyperus sp. and dead Sphagnum and a taller herbaceous layer which transitions from Saccharum (Erianthus) to Panicum virgatum. Moving into the Panicum dominated area, Saccharum and Cyperus cover drop out with Panicum virgatum cover increasing to 65% and only a few Carex striata.
Note: Although the whole 4.5-acre pond was mapped for this occurrence, Panicum virgatum Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 3 acres of the pond.
