Soil Description: muck, pH 4.6, overlies sands and clays of the Magothy Formation
Landscape Description: 0.5-acre, pondshore community in good condition within a coastal plain intermittent pond surrounded by deciduous wooded wetlands [largest pond may be artificial]. Surrounding landscape is very gently undulating, with forested wetlands in low areas (about 90 feet elevation and lower) and agricultural fields, residences and some industry in the more elevated areas (about 100-130 feet elevation). Nuphar lutea spp. advena - Nymphaea odorata Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zones of both ponds. The adjacent upper pondshore zone (A2) is dominated by Cephalanthus occidentalis and Decodon verticillatus, with an unidentified grass, Polygonum lapathifolium, Leersia oryzoides, Polygonum caespitosum, Sphagnum sp., Panicum verrucosum, Eleocharis ovata, Scirpus cyperinus and Triadenum virginicum. The ponds are surrounded by Acer rubrum and Liquidambar styraciflua-dominated forest, with Nyssa sylvatica, Vaccinium corymbosum, Quercus palustris, Leucothoe racemosa, Fagus grandifolia, Polygonum lapathifolium, Clethra alnifolia, Rhododendron viscosum, Smilax rotundifolia, Amelanchier canadensis and Quercus alba (A1). Wetland forest extends into the surrounding area, but agricultural fields, homes and sand mining operations dominate much of the surrounding landscape. There are three homes within 100 feet of the site and a paved road lined with homes lies about 150 feet to the southeast.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: This is an open area of the pond with predominantly, exposed soil with scattered Nuphar lutea ssp. advena and one small patch of water. Good quality, sparsely vegetated herbaceous pondshore community occurring in the middle zones of two adjacent coastal plain intermittent ponds. Dominant species is Nuphar lutea ssp. advena (about 25%), with scattered Polygonum spp. in the larger, more southerly pond and scattered Eleocharis ovata in the smaller pond to the north. Water covered about 3% of the larger pond on the survey date. The northern pond was dry, with cracks in surface. Full sun exposure with very little slope.
Note: Although both whole ponds were mapped (2.2 acres) for this occurrence, Nuphar lutea ssp. advena - Nymphaea odorata Herbaceous Vegetation occupies approximately 0.4 acres of the larger, southerly pond and 0.12 acres of the northwestern pond.
