Site is 0.8 miles north northwest of Bullock. From Bullock, travel west-northwest on Mt. Misery Road about 1.5 miles to Butler Place Road, turn right (northeast). Travel 0.7 miles to Broken Arm Road, turn right (south) and continue about 0.4 miles. Site is made up of three ponds. One is on right about 200 feet west of road, one is on right about 100 feet east of road. To reach third pond, continue south an additional 0.2 miles to Y-intersection. Turn sharply left (north) and continue 0.4 miles. Third pond is about 75 feet east of road.

Soil Description: thick layer of duff and roots, pH approximately 3.8, overlying sand of the Cohansey Formation
Landscape Description: Upper shore of a coastal plain pond community. The surrounding landscape is relatively flat, underlain by sand substrate of the Cohansey Formation. The South Branch of Mount Misery Brook and Middle Branch headwaters run within a ½ mile of the pond, to the southwest and north, respectively. Eleocharis (olivacea, microcarpa, robbinsii) - Xyris (difformis var. difformis, smalliana) Herbaceous Vegetation dominates the central zone of the pond (A1). The adjacent middle shore (A2) is dominated by Dichanthelium sp., with Panicum verrucosum, Carex sp., Muhlenbergia torreyana, Panicum rigidulum var. pubescens, Cladium mariscoides, Juncus pelocarpus, Sphagnum sp. and Panicum virgatum. The surrounding upper shore (A3) is dominated by Carex striata var. brevis and Sphagnum sp., with Triadenum virginicum. A tall shrub zone (A4) surrounds the pond, dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, with Leucothoe racemosa, Smilax glauca and S. rotundifolia, and scattered 20-25 feet tall Pinus rigida, Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica. The shrub zones of the northerly ponds (B3) is also dominated by Vaccinium corymbosum, but includes Chamaedaphne calyculata, Sphagnum sp., Carex striata var. striata, Kalmia angustifolia and Photinia pyrifolia, as well. There is an abrupt transition to Pinus rigida forest along the outer edge of the Vaccinium zone. Central Railroad passes about 0.7 miles to the southeast. There are cranberry bogs and some clearings for sand or logs within a mile of the site, but the area is primarily forested. Some nearby forest is heavily crisscrossed with a 300-500 foot grid of sand roads, indicating it may be managed for wildlife, but there is no indication of anthropogenic disturbance in the surrounding buffer land other than potential management of fires or logging for wildlife.

Community Type: coastal plain pond
Community Description: This is a tall shrub zone, 10-20 m wide, on the upper shore of a coastal plain pond. Scattered Pinus rigida, Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica are 5-20' tall. Acer rubrum is much more abundant on the W side. Pinus rigida is more abundant in the N and NE section. This area transitions to the Pinus rigida forest abruptly at the outer edge. The site is relatively flat.
Additional species present but not in observation area: Lyonia mariana (0.01%)
