Observation Narrative ? General Description: A cool swamp situated next to Mountain Lakes Brook. A shrubby fen borders the east side of the brook on the northern portion of the swamp. Adjacent to the fen is a Larix laricina dominated swamp. To the south, the swamp grades into an Acer rubrum dominated swamp. Species of more northern distributions such as Coptis groenlandica (now Coptis trifolia), Nemopanthus mucronatus (now Ilex mucronata), and Carex disperma are found in the swamp. The fen has some characteristic calciphiles such as Betula pumila, Rhamnus alnifolia and Salix candida. Rosa palustris becomes abundant towards the brook. The dominant herb is Carex stricta in the fen. Community Description: This is a shrubby fen with Rhamnus alnifolia, Betula pumila and Cornus stolonifera dominating. Scattered Larix laricina and Fraxinus nigra rise above the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer is dominated Carex stricta. Although some characteristic species such as Salix candida and Betula pumila are present, others such as Potentilla fruticosa (now Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda) and Rhynchospora capillacea are noticeably absent. One would suspect that this fen is not as strongly calcareous as other better quality fens. Rosa palustris becomes abundant towards Mountain Lake Brook. On the landward side, the fen is bordered by a tamarack swamp with average DBH <12". The small trees in the surrounding forest and the advancing succession occurring in the fen may indicate that this is an area which was once forested, then cleared by logging or natural disturbance, and is now rapidly returning to swamp forest.; tree dominants - Larix laricina (<5%), Fraxinus nigra (<5%); shrub dominants - Betula pumila (>10%), Cornus stolonifera (>10%), Rhamnus alnifolia (>10%); herbaceous dominant - Carex stricta (70%)
