Community Type: calcareous seepage swamp
General Description: A cool swamp situated next to Mountain Lakes Brook. A shrubby fen borders the east side of the brook on the northern portion of the swamp. Adjacent to the fen is a Larix laricina dominated swamp. To the south, the swamp grades into an Acer rubrum dominated swamp. Species of more northern distributions such as Coptis groenlandica (now Coptis trifolia), Nemopanthus mucronatus (now Ilex mucronata), and Carex disperma are found in the swamp. The fen has some characteristic calciphiles such as Betula pumila, Rhamnus alnifolia and Salix candida. Rosa palustris becomes abundant towards the brook. The dominant herb is Carex stricta in the fen.
Community Description: This is a red mape - tussock sedge, saturated deep peat swamp at the toe of slope between a ridge and a brook. The swamp is hummocky, diverse and open (60% canopy).
