Observation Narrative
General Description: A cool swamp situated next to Mountain Lakes Brook. A shrubby fen borders the east side of the brook on the northern portion of the swamp. Adjacent to the fen is a Larix laricina dominated swamp. To the south, the swamp grades into an Acer rubrum dominated swamp. Species of more northern distributions such as Coptis groenlandica (now Coptis trifolia), Nemopanthus mucronatus (now Ilex mucronata), and Carex disperma are found in the swamp. The fen has some characteristic calciphiles such as Betula pumila, Rhamnus alnifolia and Salix candida. Rosa palustris becomes abundant towards the brook. The dominant herb is Carex stricta in the fen.
Community Description: Very hummocky fen with deep pockets of peaty muck. A lot of Larix is standing dead, but there is some regeneration. Betula pumila and Salix candida are diagnostic. Aronia appears. Fraxinus nigra drops out completely.
