Landscape Description: Positioned within an Acer rubrum swamp in a glacial valley with very deep peat accumulation. Adjacent uplands are patchy successional forest and abandoned fields. Acer rubrum swamp is dry and overrun with Berberis thunbergii and Lonicera tatarica with very little other diversity.

Community Description: This is a calcareous shrub carr within an Acer rubrum swamp. Characteristic species include Betula pumila, Toxicodendron vernix, Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda, Myrica gale, Juniperus virginica, Rhododendron viscosum, Vaccinium corymbosum. Very deep peat. Canopy cover and degree of saturation is variable. This well-developed shrub carr may eventually succeed into A. rubrum swamp.
