Landscape Narrative ? Landscape Description: The site is situated in a wide valley of the Wildcat Brook and is bordered by upland limestone forest to the SE and lowland Acer rubrum swamp and Acer-Populus lowland forest to the south. To the east of the fen complex lies an extensive Typha-dominated wetland (formerly fen) and to the west is Old Prospect Road and residential development on large lots. A beaver-impounded fen lies to the N and E of the large turfy juniper fen. Fen communities present include: turfy juniper, marl seep, shrub carr and deep peat. Area has been historically ditched and grazed. Surrounding upland is largely residential. Surrounding wetland valley is in very good condition. Landscape Structure and Extent: Site is adjacent to shrub carr, patch of lowland Acer rubrum-Juniperus-Populus grandidentata forest, an upland Quercus forest, an encroaching Typha marsh and a turfy Juniper fen.

Observation Narrative ? Community Description: This is a marl seep community bordered by a large turfy juniper fen on one side, part of a large Typha marsh on another, a shrub carr, Acer rubrum-Juniperus virginiana-Populus grandidentata lowland forest, and a limestone upland forest on the last side. Calcareous seepage is variable throughout the community. Some areas are very harsh (high CaCO3) and dominated by Carex stricta. Soils are muck over organic-mineral and sand (sometimes rock). Area grades into nearby shrub carr. History of grazing and ditching. Species Composition and Biological Structure: Relatively homogeneous species composition but 1/4 of the site is harsher (high CaCO3) than the rest: marl rivulets, large limestone rocks, Rhynchospora dominates with Deschampsia.
