Landscape Description: The site is positioned in a low, wide valley of relatively intact Acer rubrum lowlands, field and pasture, Juniperus woodland, open Typha and Phalaris marsh (created by historic land use; area was formerly fen and lowland forested limestone swamp) and remnant pieces of turfy juniper fen and marl seep fen. Uplands adjacent to fen are mostly cultivated or grazed. Upland forest ~1/2 mile off appears to be dominated by Quercus, Pinus strobus, and Tsuga. Springs, streams and rivulets are abundant through part of the site, but most have been cut by erosion, possibly contributing to hydrologic changes. Adjacent mountains are undeveloped and partially public land.

Observation Narrative |
Community Description: Much of this community has not recovered from historic land uses. It is dominated by common species (Cornus racemosa, encroaching Phalaris), lacks typical hummock/hollow microtopography and supports only a few species common to turfy juniper fens. A small portion of the community is representative of an intact turfy juniper fen and the species recorded were mostly in this area. Adjacent communities include a Phalaris-dominated marsh (old fen), a seepy Juniperus woodland, and a monospecific Carex lacustris area.
Species Composition and Biological Structure: The community is confined to two distinct areas within a larger wetland complex. The area surveyed here is composed of two somewhat distinct areas. One is an intact example of a turfy juniper fen (~1/8 ac). The other has been colonized by Phalaris, Rosa multiflora, dense Solidago, Cornus racemosa and other species that fares well in disturbed areas. There are less hummocks and hollows and it is drier than the intact turfy juniper fen.
