Landscape Narrative ![?](http://vegbank.org/vegbank/images/question.gif) |
Landscape Description: The site is positioned in a low, wide valley of relatively intact Acer rubrum lowlands, field and pasture, Juniperus woodland, open Typha and Phalaris marsh (created by historic land use; area was formerly fen and lowland forested limestone swamp) and remnant pieces of turfy juniper fen and marl seep fen. Uplands adjacent to fen are mostly cultivated or grazed. Upland forest ~1/2 mile off appears to be dominated by Quercus, Pinus strobus, and Tsuga. Springs, streams and rivulets are abundant through part of the site, but most have been cut by erosion, possibly contributing to hydrologic changes. Adjacent mountains are undeveloped and partially public land.
Landscape Structure and Extent: Adjacent communities include a Typha/Phalaris/Lythrum wet meadow downslope from the seep, and a disturbed emergent border adjacent to upland fields and a hedgerow. Upland forest (beyond adjacent farm fields and across road) appears undeveloped and intact.

Observation Narrative ![?](http://vegbank.org/vegbank/images/question.gif) |
Community Description: This is a very low mat of cespitose sedges and scattered individuals of Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda. The fen slopes (~30 degrees) with rivulets of organic matter over limestone sand and clay. Adjacent communities include a large Typha/Phalaris marsh, agricultural fields, hedgerow and a disturbed emergent wetland with a patch of Acer rubrum/Ulmus and Phalaris. Community occurs as a single patch within a large wetland complex.
Species Composition and Biological Structure: Somewhat variable. Some areas support only cespitose sedges and a few other species. Other areas (~75% of the total area) support a more diverse mix of species characteristic of this type of fen.
