Landscape Narrative |
Soil Description: deep peat.
Landscape Description: The site is located in a narrow, secondary valley vegetated by a mosaic of lowland Carex stricta-Acer rubrum swamp, lowland Fraxinus forest, wet Pinus strobus and Populus groves, a steep limestone upland forest, a Phalaris-dominated floodplain, successional woodland, lowland seepage Juniperus woodland, and upland pasture. The entire valley was ditched approximately 20-40 years ago and a portion has been redredged recently. The valley was grazed by cattle until recently.
Landscape Structure and Extent: Adjacent communities include disturbed successional lowland woodland and a degraded turfy juniper area.

Observation Narrative |
Community Description: Small fen patch on either side of an old farm road. One side of the road is a Carex stricta dominated fen that is succeeding into a shrub carr; very little open area remains. The other side is also dominated by Carex stricta, but other sedges are more common and only patches of the community are approaching the typical assemblage of a shrub carr. Poorly-defined hummock-hollow microtopography and low species diversity and richness in most areas. The effects of historic land use are still evident.
Species Composition and Biological Structure: The matrix of this community is Carex stricta and old Carex stricta hummocks. Species composition and community structure are variable. Young shrub carr is present in two areas.
