Soil Description: mineral
Landscape Description: The site is located in a narrow, secondary valley vegetated by a mosaic of lowland Carex stricta-Acer rubrum swamp, lowland Fraxinus forest, wet Pinus strobus and Populus groves, a steep limestone upland forest, a Phalaris-dominated floodplain, successional woodland, lowland seepage Juniperus woodland, and upland pasture. The entire valley was ditched approximately 20-40 years ago and a portion has been redredged recently. The valley was grazed by cattle until recently.
Landscape Structure and Extent: Adjacent communities include a band of seeping lowland Juniperus woodlands bordered by lowland Acer forest on one side and a Phalaris dominated wet meadow floodplain on the other side. The area is still recovering from historic land use.

Observation Narrative |
Community Description: This is a dry turfy juniper fen with level microtopography. It is bordered by a thick band of Juniperus, yet there are no Juniper individuals in the open fen. Soil is mineral. The fen is positioned on a very slight rise that slopes down into an open, Phalaris-dominated low energy floodplain crossed by a small meandering stream that is recovering from historic dredging. Nearly homogeneous species composition.
