Landscape Narrative |
Landscape Description: The site is located in a narrow, secondary valley vegetated by a mosaic of lowland Carex stricta-Acer rubrum swamp, lowland Fraxinus forest, wet Pinus strobus and Populus groves, a steep limestone upland forest, a Phalaris-dominated floodplain, successional woodland, lowland seepage Juniperus woodland, and upland pasture. The entire valley was ditched approximately 20-40 years ago and a portion has been redredged recently. The valley was grazed by cattle until recently.
Landscape Structure and Extent: Adjacent communities include a shrub carr that borders 2/3 of this community and a thick Juniperus woodland adjacent to a nearly monospecific stand of young Acer rubrum. The adjacent shrub carr is dominated by Betula pumila and Rhododendron viscosum and the ground is covered with Sphagnum. This area grades into an Acer rubrum swamp.

Observation Narrative |
Community Description: This community is dominated by rizomatous Scirpus, Juncus and Carex that form a nearly continuous mat throughout the site. Shrub or Juniperus hummocks blanketed with Sphagnum are scattered throughout the fen. Small patches of a Carex-Sarracenia fen, with a structure more common to marl seeps occur on the edges. The fen is surrounded by a shrub carr and an Acer-Juniperus seepage swamp. Large rocks and old hummocks covered with Sphagnum and species such as Myrica, Vaccinium, and Betula pumila occur throughout. Calopogon tuberosus is common in the Juncus dominated areas. Species composition is heterogeneous with patches of Carex-Sarracenia, Scirpus sp., Juncus sp. and shrub-Sphagnum hummocks.
