Observation Narrative |
Community Description: Damp woods sloping gently downhill to the east, just over a low broad rise, from a linear seepage area. Trees are mixed hardwoods (Acer, Nyssa, Liquidambar, Quercus, Fagus) with a thin emergent pitch pine and a thick subcanopy of American holly. Downed wood may be cedar. Tall shrubs are more dominant at the eastern end of the plot, especially Vaccinium corymbosum and Rhododendron viscosum. Thick leaf litter is present elsewhere. In the wettest areas, large trees are on hummocks. Soil is sandy loam over sandy clay. Water table at 37 cm. No forbs are in this plot except Osmunda (5%) and traces of Chimaphila and Mitchella. No evident disturbance except for a few large stumps from trees cut long ago.
