Observation Narrative |
Community Description: Ecotonal area between rolling mesic upland and saturated swamp. Upland tree species include Carya tomentosa, C. pallida, Sassafras and Cornus florida. Land slopes very gently downhill in the plot, which is part of the Fishing Creek drainage. Even where it appears dry, water table is 12 cm beneath on seemingly dry ground. Plot tree species are dominated by Acer rubrum, Liquidambar, Nyssa. Subcanopy has a lot of Magnolia and American holly. Especially in the wettest area of the plot, the tall shrub layer is very thick and well-developed. No apparent disturbance in this area. Soil has a fluffy loam layer over pale sand. Few forbs present but maybe more in summer. Leaf litter from hollies does not encourage forb growth. East end of the plot is hummocky with standing water. Hummocks are mossy but not Sphagnum. Emergents are possible in spring. Largest trees thin out where it is very wet.
