Plot location: Along headwaters of the Willis River just downstream from the Cole Forest Road. bridge.
The Virginia Department of Forestry has designated this stream-bottom site (26 acres) as the Headwaters Natural Area, recognizing the forest as an outstanding representative of its cover type. This stand is young to medium-age and dominated by Liriodendron tulipifera and Liquidambar styraciflua, with a scattering of other trees. The site is relatively well drained and probably floods infrequently. The understory and herbaceous flora is diverse, with high species richness. Very few exotics are present. The stand is very representative of the Liquidambar styraciflua - Liriodendron tulipifera / Lindera benzoin / Arisaema triphyllum Forest ecological community type defined in the National Vegetation Classification.
