Observation Narrative
Plot location: SE of the jct. Rtes. 692 and 614, NW of Holiday Lake State Park.
This site is a shallow ravine-head that is somewhat more mesic than the upland where nearby plot ASBF002 is located. The forest here is more readily characterized as an oak-hickory association, with Quercus alba and Carya glabra more important, and Quercus montana and ericads somewhat less important, than on the drier surrounding upland and herbaceous flora. Soils, however, are still extremely acidic and low in base status. Oak recruitment is very poor in this stand. Hickory recruitment is fairly strong, but Nyssa sylvatica and Acer rubrum dominate the understory with the highest stem densities. This stand is part of the State Forest Upland Hardwood Natural Area set aside as an excellent example of the regionally prevalent forest cover type.
