Observation Narrative
Plot location: <0.2 km E of Rt. 626 at a point 0.3 km S of jct. with Rt. 723.
A very oligotrophic upland oak forest with a moderately to extremely dense shrub layer of Kalmia latifolia and young Oxydendrum arboreum. Medium-age Quercus alba, Quercus coccinea, and Quercus montana dominate the overstory, but there is little oak recruitment in lower layers. Nyssa sylvatica is abundant, and attains the highest stem density, in the understory. Few herbaceous plants occur here.
