Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 0.2 km ESE of jct. Rtes. 626 and 614.
The site is a very gentle upland slope with extremely acidic, nutrient-poor soils. Vegetation is a secondary mixed oak forest with a strong ericaceous component in the shrub layer. Quercus montana and Quercus alba share overstory dominance, while Acer rubrum and Nyssa sylvatica attain high stem densities and cover in the understory. Low colonial shrubs of Gaylussacia baccata and Vaccinium pallidum dominate the herb layer. The stand is representative of stands that cover large areas in this central Piedmont region, and are currently suffering from low to poor oak recruitment and invasion by fire-intolerant mesophytic trees like Acer rubrum.
