Observation Narrative
Plot location: ca. 40 meters SE of Rt. 612 at a point ca. 2.1 km SW of jct. with Rt. 636.
This appears to be one of the larger fragments of undisturbed hardwood forest in the Appomattox- Buckingham State Forest. The stand has a mixed overstory of medium-aged Quercus montana and Quercus alba, with excellent recruitment of Quercus montana in the all understory layers. Acer rubrum, Cornus florida, and Vaccinium spp. are the most abundant species of the lower woody strata. Unlike many dry oak forests of the region, this stand does not have a pronounced understory of invading red maple.
