Observation Narrative
Plot located on the rocky, upper, SW-facing slope of Wolfpit Mountain, the highest elevation in the monadnock-like Southwest Mountains range of the inner Piedmont east of Charlottesville. The extensive oak-hickory forest on this slope was selectively logged in the 1990's, but a small area in and around the plot was not touched for reasons unknown. The site is underlain by metabasalt of the Catoctin Formation and soils have moderately high calcium, high magnesium, and high manganese levels. The remnant forest is a medium-age stand more or less co-dominated by Carya ovalis and Quercus montana, with abundant Cercis canadensis in the understory. Overall species-richness is fairly high.
