Observation Narrative
Narrow, convex slope did not permit a larger plot within homogeneous vegetation and with constant aspect. To the east the understory opens up near small ravine, and Kalmia latifolia abruptly drops out. To have included this area in a larger plot would have failed to represent accurately the prevailing Quercus montana / Kalmia community on this ridge. Large charcoal fragments observed within and around plot. At least some seem associated with chestnut logs and may represent artifacts of ground fires or lightning strikes. Large but somewhat asymmetric crowns of canopy oaks suggest several periods of past disturbance.
Plot is on land owned by Hal and Jean Kolb and under conservation easement.
