Observation Narrative
Plot location: NW shore of Schrader Lake, ca. 400 meters NNE of Rt. 659.
Actual bedrock appears to be Czmi.
Bedrock at this site is apparently part of the complex of mafic and ultramafic rocks that lies at the base of the Alligator Back Formation and runs in narrow discontinuous bands through eastern Albemarle, Nelson, and Amherst Counties. This plot documents a tiny, presumably much degraded example of xeric woodland that probably once characterized areas of this substrate. This vegetation, now dominated by Pinus virginiana, is very similar to the degraded serpentine woodlands in Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as to woodlands occuring around Schuyler, Albemarle, and Nelson Counties, where the ultramafic rocks have been much quarried. Because of the configuration/condition of the stand, only a 200 square meter plot was practical.
Bryophytes and lychen found in the plot are:
Cladina sp. ---Total Cover=8
Dicranum sp --- Total Cover =6
Leucobryum sp. Total Cover = 2.
