Plot location: Broad floodplain on W side of the Appomattox River, opposite and slightly upstream from mouth of Rocky Ford Creek.
Field estimate from top map: (UTME): 243734 (UTMN): 4151194.
Habitat is a forested, shallowly seasonally flooded backswamp. Maximum flooding depth is <20 cm in the largest sloughs. The latter were already drawn down, though wet, on the date of sampling. Quercus phellos is the general overstory dominant, although Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus palustris, Acer rubrum, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica are all frequent associates. Understory and herb layers are relatively dense and diverse. Several Carex spp., Leersia virginica, and Impatiens capensis are the most abundant and characteristic herbaceous species.
