Observation Narrative
Directions to plot: N on Route 24. First left past Park entrance; approx. 500 m before main visitor center entrance. Follow road 0.1 mi to just before road bend to right. Plot is approx. 0.1 mi NW . Edge of agricultural field is visible from plot.
Canopy of sample is dominated by Quercus alba with Carya ovata and Carya alba. Coppice Liriodendron tulipifera is in understory and much regeneration of this species in light gaps. Subcanopy is primarily Nyssa sylvatica, Cornus florida, and Cercis canadensis. The shrub layer is open and composed mostly of woody saplings. The ground layer is primarily woody seedlings (Juniperus virginiana) with only scattered Carex sp. and forbs.
The overall stand is variable in composition, but mostly Quercus alba with areas of Liriodendron dominance, primarily in light gaps. Stand was likely a former field. Evidence of an old road bed nearby. It grades SW into a Pinus virginiana stand.
