Directions to Plot: N on Route 24 from West Park entrance. First left past Park entrance; approx. 500 m before main visitor center entrance. Follow road approx. 0.5 mi to small road turning left at end of field. Go N on road until it T's with powerline. Left on powerline for approx. 0.2 mile, then hike approx.. 0.2 miles NW to steep slope above the Appomattox River floodplain.
Sample was placed in a small patch of forest with large diameter trees, apparently spared from logging. Canopy is a mix of Carya ovalis, Carya ovata, with scattered Quercus rubra, Fraxinus americana, and Fagus grandifolia. Subcanopy strata are Carya sp. with Carpinus
caroliniana and Cornus florida. Shrubs are largely Carpinus. Field layer is a mix of rich-site forbs and graminoids. Species indicative of high base status soils include Scutellaria serrata, Collinsonia canadensis, Carya ovata, Adiantum pedatum, and Sanguinaria canadensis.
Area surrounding sample is largely Carya - Quercus Forest with evidence of logging and gaps with young regeneration.
