Observation Narrative
Wet prairie vegetation is indicated by the abundance of Spartina pectinata, a species that in Virginia is more characteristic of rocky riverside scour zones than of open, meadow-like habitats. Wetland vegetation at this site has been degraded by years of periodic cattle grazing, ditching and the invasion of Phalaris arundinacea which, in many places, is the overwhelming dominant. This plot is positioned to capture the best remaining mixed vegetation that has not been completely overrun by Phalaris. It is unclear whether this wetland should be classified as "saturated" or "seasonally flooded". Groundwater here is perched at of near the surface during the spring and areas of shallow inundation are present.
Plot located 0.2 mi southeast of the confluence of Coles Run and South River.
0 - 1 - duff/thatch
1+ - dark, gray brown loam grading to blackish loamy clay at 10-12 cm
Soil series mapped erroneously as Atkins fine sandy loam sandy loam.
