Observation Narrative
This plot represents Fleming and Moorhead's plot 2 (subsequently identified as BSB3; now BIGS001S), in the southern of the two fen openings at Big Spring Bog NAP. Plot extended from original dimensions of 5 x 15 m to conform to standard size of modules; center of plot (marked by rebar stake) remained fixed. As a result additional upland species (e.g., Kalmia carolina, Pinus rigida) were encountered.
The vegetation of this fen had evidently changed considerably during the 1990's and by 2000 several invasive species severely threatened the light-demanding rare plants. Most notably, Dichanthelium dichotomum, Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis, and O. cinnamomea had experienced significant increases in cover, and the opening appeared to be shrinking due to expansion of adjacent woody vegetation. What Rawinski had described in 1990 as a 300-500 sq. m opening could barely contain a 100 sq. m plot in 2000. In addition seedlings of Acer rubrum and Pinus strobus seemed to be invading the interior of the fen. In response emergency management removed woody vegetation and increased the size of the opening ca. threefold. Frequent monitoring of population dynamics, hydrology, and light levels is clearly warranted.
