Observation Narrative
This plot represents Fleming and Moorhead's plot 1 (subsequently identified as BSB2; now BIGS002S), in the northern of the two fen openings at Big Spring Bog NAP. Plot expanded from original dimensions of 5 x 15 m to conform to standard size of modules. As a result additional upland species (e.g., Kalmia carolina, Pinus rigida) were encountered. The vegetation of this fen had evidently changed considerably during the 1990's and by 2000 several invasive species severely threatened the light-demanding rare plants. Most notably, Vernonia noveboracensis, Dichanthelium dichotomum, and Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis had experienced significant increases in cover, and the opening appeared to be shrinking due to expansion of adjacent woody vegetation. What Rawinski had described in 1990 as a 300-500 sq. m opening could barely contain a 100 sq. m plot in 2000. In addition seedlings of Acer rubrum and Pinus strobus seemed to be invading the interior of the fen. In response emergency management removed woody vegetation and increased the size of the opening ca. fourfold. Frequent monitoring of population dynamics, hydrology, and light levels is clearly warranted.
