Observation Narrative
This stand may confound the distinction between the two recognized pine-oak/heath community types in Virginia. Pinus pungens is the dominant pine (although P. strobus occurs in the shrub and subcanopy strata) and P. rigida is entirely absent, but Gaultheria procumbens is an important constituent of the ground layer. Stand grades abruptly into acidic cove forest below rock outcrop ca. 20 m downslope from the plot (Rhododendron catawbiense abounds below) and continues above to ridgeline. Vaccinium angustifolium is an uncommon component of this vegetation in Virginia, but abounds locally on the Big Levels plateau.
Directions to plot and tagged tree:
Plot location was pre-selected in the project's stratified-random sampling design.
Follow White Rock Canyon Trail down from The Slacks Overlook. After crossing creek on bridge, go ca. 110 m, then turn off trail to the east. Plot and tree (Pinus strobus, 20 cm dbh, tag #311) located ca. 30 m upslope from creek.
