Directions to plot and tree tag:
Park near exit of picnic area along Rt. 43. Walk 150m north up the slope until you see the large Prunus serotina with a large Toxicodendron radicans vine clinging to it. Tagged tree is a Prunus serotina of 71 cm dbh with tag #406. Conduit is at a bearing of 71 degrees and 11.5 m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
This is a maturing oak-hickory forest with very large Prunus serotina, Carya ovata, and Quercus prinus. The eastern half has few exposed rocks. The rock gradient increases towards the western side of the plot, with the extreme western end turning into talus. The subcanopy contains hickories and Sassafras albidum. The shrub layer is moderate, containing Lindera benzoin, hickories, and Prunus serotina. The herb layer is sparse but quite diverse.
