Directions to plot and tree tag:
From Smart View picnic area, proceed south on hiking trail towards Cannaday Gap. Where trail forks, bear right. Proceed ca. 700m to slope just below knoll on left. Ascend to top of knoll at edge of escarpment, then descend, bearing just north of due east. Point located on south side of steep, narrow gorge, but travel is easier on convex slope of north side. Point located about 500m from summit of knoll. Tagged tree is a Liriodendron tulipifera of 44 cm dbh with tag #484. Conduit is at a bearing of 32 degrees and 8.2 m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
Young tulip tree forest ~40 years old. No exotics. Moderately rich but sparse herb layer. Stand occupies relatively gentle slope (almost bench) at base of escarpment. Topography undoubtedly made this site accessible for logging. Terrain upslope is much steeper and supports a rich mesophytic forest with a lush herb layer. Streams have incised deeply and produced steep, narrow gorges. One such ravine runs tangential to northern edge of hectare.
